Hi all
Just posting for a bit of advice really. Last Saturday I woke with a nagging pain in my left kidney. I pottered for a bit but the pain became so over powering that I had to call an ambulance. I was taken to A & E and moved on to EAU and then on to a ward. I had a scan which revealed I had pyelonephritis, a severe inflamation and infection of the kidneys. I was put on a course of antibiotics and remained in hospital for 5 days. The whole thing has given me a terrible scare. When I last saw my RA consultant he said that my kidney function had been dropping by 10% each year and he changed my meds. I have now failed on Enbrel and am waiting to start Humaira. I am really worried that I will continue to have a weakness in my kidneys now. I am drinking loads of liquid to make sure that I am flushing my kidneys and am resting as much as I can, but I am still in a lot of pain as I am between meds. Should I voice my concerns to my GP or to my RA nurse?

Hello Louise
So sorry to hear that you have been so unwell. Kidney pain is awful (i have had kidney stones in the past) I hope you feel better soon.
Touch wood this has not effected me so unable to comment. Hopefully someone will help you soon.
With reference to your concerns I would suggest you speak with RA nurse and GP and get both views.
Good luck let us know how you get on

I do hope you feel better soon. Yes I think you should contact your nurse and GP. Get all the advice and support that you can. You have been really ill and that's what the NHS is there for. I do hope you have some support at home too. Best wishes from Naomi.

Hello Louise, As a diabetic I've been diagnosed with early stages of kidney failure so I understand your worries. You need to speak to GP first and then your rheummy team. You need to ask WHO will be keeping an eye on this for you-for me it's my diabetic clinic. I've been told to keep my blood pressure as normmal as possible-I'm on tablets for that anyway but they have told me that tight control of this helps. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hi Louise Sorry that you have been so unwell. I agree with the others that you should tell both your GP and your RA nurse but i would think you will be under care with the appropriate department at the hospital.

Hi Louise
That must be very frightening for you. I would advise same as others. Go to GP and contact rheummy nurse. You need as much info and advice as you can get to save you worrying too much.

hi Louise,
sorry to hear how poorly you've been .. it must have been very scary for you.
i can only re-iterate what all the others have said,
my first port of call would be my GP and then a phone call to Rheumy Nurse.
wishing you all the best,

Hello Louise.
WOW you must have been ill. I had pylonerphritis and nearly, well, HDU said things were touch and go rather.
So, I have been through the exact same thing, funnily enough on Enbrel.
I had scarring on the kidney and was terribly worried that it would now be weak and never fully heal. Totally wrong on that point. My kidneys are fine now- totally repaired themselves.
Humira was my next option but I was allergic to it and many others sadly but I have never had the trouble I had again with Kidneys. You most likely wont be and will be fine. Kidneys are a known issue on the Enbrel now whereas it wasnt the same when I was on it and the drug was newer.
the rigors were so painful.
In fact, I had a lot of constant kidney/ water infection issues towards the end on the Enbrel and it wasnt helping the RA as much.
Be gentle with yourself.

Hi Louise
Hope that you are now starting to feel better as the meds kick in. I haven't had pylonephritis, but it sounds really nasty.
I think Jenni's wise words will give you hope that things will be OK
Take care

Hope you are feeling better now. As everyone says, its a good idea to speak to the rheumy team as well as your GP. You definitely need to know who is going to take care of you now this has happened. Rest as much as possible, and I hope you recover soon x BARBARA

Hi Louise, I can agree that it is very frightening. I had the same thing in April, in the hospital 5 days and had to see my GP when I came out, it took a good 3 weeks to get rid of the pain and I was peeing blood as well, very frightening. I had loads of different tests that showed that every thing was ok. The Consultant in August said that in 80% of cases there is no reason for this happening. My kidney function is ok and my Rhemy Consultant wasn't concerned when I saw him in July. I hope that you are feeling better soon and you get all the support that you need. I know that it's a worry thinking it may happen again it's so dreadfully painful. I know that I feel every twing is it starting up again. Take care of yourself. Glenys.
